Rosi Golan is preparing her next EP called Collecting Bullets, which features her new single "Underneath" that you can download on iTunes and watch the music video for by using the media player included with this article. What can music fans expect from her upcoming release? What makes it different from her last record? AXS connected with Golan for an email interview to find out what she has in store for pop audiences.
AXS: How would you describe your upcoming EP?
Rosi Golan (RG): I think this is a very different sound for me. I did something I’ve wanted to do for a long time, which is lean much more pop than anything else I’ve done before; i really felt like it was time to do something different. I think one of my favorites is definitely "OMG” – it really captures a feeling I’ve had so many times in my life and when Madi Diaz and I wrote it, I finally knew we were going in the right direction with the sound. I also loved writing "Don’t You Dare" with Greg Laswell. He’s someone I’ve wanted to collaborate with for a long time.
AXS: What was your process in the studio recording the EP?
RG: My creative process is ever changing. There’s no routine or certainty to it, which is what makes it both exciting and scary. The one thing I definitely need to stay creative is forward motion. Anything that keeps things moving forward, and that includes physically. Taking a walk, riding a train, traveling somewhere, etc. It’s how I keep the creative blood flowing.
AXS: Is there a particular message that you’re wanting to convey with Collecting Bullets?
RG: I think anytime you put yourself out there and write songs that are personal you hope people will truly relate to them. There is nothing better than getting a note from someone who tells you how a song impacted them or helped them through something. I know I have had moments like that with records I listen to.
AXS: Who are some of those artists who have impacted you?
RG: This is always a tough question for me. I feel like I listen to such a wide variety of music. One second I could be listening to Snoop Dogg and the next I could be listening to Loudon Wainwright, who I love. The first album I ever bought was "Nevermind" by Nirvana, but my first musical love was Sade when I was like three. However, I can say that no playlist is complete without some Robyn!
AXS: Do you have any touring or promotional plans leading up to the release of your EP?
RG: I am releasing another single at the end of this month (“OMG”). The whole thing comes out in July and then I hope to be touring in the fall.
AXS: What made you decide you wanted to be a recording artist in the first place?
RG: Music was something I envied and loved and listened to my whole childhood, but I didn’t figure out that I actually could sing till I was 19. It was a funny thing to realize; I guess I was a late bloomer. But just like anything that feels truly right, when you know, you know. The first time I stepped on a stage at an open mic I knew there was nothing else I wanted to do more than this.
"Underneath" is now available on iTunes. Collecting Bullets is expected to release next month.
